Worn screw? Replace the flight.
A screw conveyor rarely fails as a whole. What wears is the outer edge of the flight. Shaft, bearings and drive are usually sound. Replacing the flight instead of the screw is the cheaper repair — and the one that lets you upgrade the material while you are at it.
Straight talk: we do not build complete screw conveyors — we make the part that does the work: the flight. Over 3 million pressed flights since 1980, every single one checked against a profile gauge. Your fabricator welds them on — a fit so close there is nothing left to correct.
What wears, and why
Three mechanisms do the damage: abrasion from the conveyed material, corrosion, and adhesion where the product sticks and tears. Abrasion attacks the outer edge first, because the peripheral speed is highest there. Once the flight has lost a few millimetres of diameter, throughput drops, the product recirculates, and the wear accelerates.
Replace the flight, keep the screw
- Measure outside Ø, inside Ø, pitch, plate thickness, hand and material — six numbers.
- Upgrade the grade while you are replacing: Hardox 400/450, Creusabro or X120Mn12 manganese steel.
- We press, you weld. Segments arrive gauged; your fabricator cuts off the old flight and welds on the new.
- Quote in 24 hours, standard 5–10 days, express 24–48 hours on request.
When replacement is the wrong answer
If the shaft is bent, the bearing seats are worn oval, or the tube has cracked, a new flight will not save it. Send us photographs before you order — we will say so.
Frequently asked
Can a worn screw be repaired instead of replaced?
In most cases, yes. The shaft and bearings usually outlast the flight by a wide margin. Cutting off the worn flight and welding on new pressed segments is normally far cheaper than a new screw — and it is faster.
We do not have a drawing. Can you still help?
Yes. Outside diameter, inside diameter, pitch, plate thickness, hand and material are enough. Measure the old flight, or send a photo with a rule laid across it.
Can you make the replacement more wear-resistant than the original?
Usually. Moving from mild steel to Hardox 400/450, Creusabro or manganese steel typically multiplies service life in abrasive duty, at a modest premium on the flight.
